Pepper Lunch is a Japanese fast-casual restaurant known not for a single fixed dish, but for its concept: food served on a sizzling hot iron plate that keeps cooking right in front of you. The Pepper Lunch menu changes by location and season, and the toppings vary, but one thing is always featured — the hot iron plate.
That sizzling plate is what defines the Pepper Lunch experience.
Among all Pepper Lunch menu items, the most iconic and signature dish is Beef Pepper Lunch: thinly sliced beef, rice, and simple seasoning cooked directly on the iron plate and mixed at the table. That’s the dish this recipe is inspired by.
A Personal Memory

My own memory of Pepper Lunch goes back to high school, when an older friend took me there for the first time. We sat around the hot iron plate, carefully mixing the beef and rice while it sizzled in front of us. It felt exciting, a little dangerous because the plate was so hot, and somehow very special.
It wasn’t just food — it was an experience.
That’s why Pepper Lunch works for both kids and adults. It’s interactive, playful, and comforting at the same time.
Why Make Pepper Lunch at Home
Not everyone has easy access to Pepper Lunch locations, and even when you do, you don’t always want to go out just to enjoy that sizzling skillet experience.
By using a cast iron skillet at home, you can recreate the core of Pepper Lunch: the sound, the heat, and the moment when everything comes together in the pan.
This recipe is a copycat of Beef Pepper Lunch, the signature Pepper Lunch menu item, adjusted for a home kitchen — simple ingredients, one pan, and a lot of pepper.
And yes, because it’s Pepper Lunch, don’t be shy with the black pepper.
